Abstract

Aim and Objective: The aim of the study is to validate the heavy metal analysis of a Siddha Poly Herbal Formulation “Siringipaerathi Chooranam” (SPC) through a scientific technique Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometric analysis (ICP-OES). Meterials and Methods: Siddha system of medicine is the one of the traditional system of medicine, which has been being practiced by the South Indian dravidan people. “Siringipaerathi Chooranam” is one the Siddha drug chosen from the siddha classical literature “Sarabendra Vaidhiya Muraigal” Soolai, Moola, Kusta, Pitharoga Muraigal, page no: 194-195. Which is indicated for hepatoprotective activity. There is a necessary for the analysis of heavy metal analysis before implementation of the trail drug to the clinical trail. Thus an attempt was made to screen the heavy metal analysis of the Siddha herbal preparation of “Siringipaerathi Chooranam” through the scientific method of ICP-OES. The Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometric (ICP-OES) analysis was done in SAIF, IIT MADRAS, Chennai-36, using Perkin Elmer Optima 5300 DV. In the spectrometer, the deflected light is passed by the different wavelength and amplified to yield an strength of measurement that can be converted to an elemental concentration by comparison with standardization values. Results: The study showed the presence of Ca(54.120 mg/l), Fe(12.300 mg/l), K(60.821 mg/dl), Na(0.3110 mg/l), P(8.541 mg/dl) has physiologically important. In Siringipaerathi Chooranam, the heavy metals like As, Cd, Hg, Pb,S and Ni were found to be below the detectable level. This reveals the safety of the trail drug. Conclusion: Thus the preliminary heavy metal analysis of a Siddha drug will give a finger-prints to safety of the drug and recommended for further clinical studies.

Keywords: Heavy metal analysis, ICP-OES, Siddha, Siringipaerathi Chooranam, SPC.
