Abstract
Introduction: Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) implies placing the new born baby in intimate skin- to –skin contact with the mother’s chest and abdomen coupled with frequent and preferably exclusive breastfeeding. Objectives: The study was attempted to assess the effectiveness of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) on physiological parameters of Low Birth Weight babies. Materials and Methods: Pre experimental, one group pre-test post-test design was adopted for the present study. Data was collected by using Kangaroo Mother Care assessment tool after an informed consent. Subjects consist of 40 samples where the physiological parameters i.e; Heart-rate, Respiratory- rate, Temperature, Oxygen saturation and weight gain was assessed Pre-KMC and after 7days of providing Kangaroo Mother Care the physiological parameters was re-assessed. Results and Analysis: The data collected was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics and presented in terms of frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, paired ‘t’ test, chi-square. Frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to describe the selected variables. Chi-square (χ2) to find out the association between the physiological parameters of Low Birth Weight babies with selected demographic variables. Discussion and Conclusion: The data showed that the mean Post- KMC score of the physiological parameters i.e; Heart-rate = 128.5, Respiratory –rate = 42, Temperature = 36.72, Oxygen saturation = 92.25, weight gain =1.35 was higher than the mean Pre-KMC score i.e; Heart-rate=124.5, Respiratory – rate=35.75, Temperature=34.75, Oxygen saturation=91.5, weight Gain= 1.30. There was significant difference between the mean Pre-KMC and Post-KMC score (t40= 2.02, p<0.05).
