Abstract
Background: A Schiff base, a pharmacologically privileged scaffold
is a nitrogen analog of an aldehyde or ketone in which the Carbonyl
(C=O) group is replaced by Imine (C=N-R) group. Mannich base is a
beta-amino-ketone, which is formed in the reaction of an amine,
an aldehyde and a carbon acid. Objective: The goal of the study is to
synthesize combined form of the various Schiff’s bases of Oxindole
with Fluoro-quinolone antibiotic like Norfloxacin for enhanced
Pharmacological and biological activity. Methods: Various
conventional as well as green (Microwave) methods are incorporated
for synthesis of Schiff’s bases as well as Mannich bases on
comparative background. Biological evaluation was done according to
the literature. Results and conclusion: Despite of Norfloxacin’s
versatile pharmacological activities, it possesses certain functional groups in it, which on
metabolism decreases bioavailability of the drug as well as increases adverse effects. Thus,
Derivatization method was incorporated to shun the side effects of the drug by synthesizing
its Mannich bases with Schiff bases having additional antibacterial activity.
Keywords: Schiff’s Base, Mannich Base, Oxindole, Norfloxacin, antibacterial, Microwave etc.
