A PROSPECTIVE STUDY ON THE MANAGEMENT OF EPILEPTIC DRUGS AND DRUG RELATED PROBLEMS OF EPILEPTIC PATIENTS IN A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL

Abstract
Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent
unprovoked seizures. An epileptic seizure refers to transient
occurrence of signs and symptoms due to abnormally excessive or
synchronous neuronal activity in the brain. the epileptic seizure may be
characterized by sensory, motor or autonomic phenomena with or
without loss of consciousness. It has been considered as a public health
problem by world health organization (WHO). Worldwide prevalence
of the active epilepsy ranges from 4 to 5 per 1000 population. in india,
the prevalence rate of epilepsy ranges between 4.15 and 7.03 per 1000
population. Epilepsy adversely affects the psycho-social status and
quality of life of patients. Almost any type of brain pathology can
cause epilepsy. Our study shows that clobazam and levetiracetem was the anti-epileptic drug
preferred in majority of the epilepsy patients. Double therapy of prescribing pattern of antiepilepsy
were used for the better control of epilepsy. Management of epilepsy can be
achieved through levetiracetem in most of the patients. Around 6% of drug interaction were
found and reported to the study department.
