STUDY THE EFFECT OF AHARIYA DRAVYA YAVA (BARLEY) ON MEDOVRUDDHI (OVERWEIGHT) - AN INTERVENTIONAL CLINICAL STUDY

Abstract

Overweight is a blessing of modern age of machine and materialism which result into clinical entity that is called as obesity. This condition of obesity can be diagnosed earlier that is in overweight condition. In Ayurveda, Medovruddhi (Overweight) and Sthoulya (Obesity) are described separately. Medovruddhi is a condition before the Sthansamshraya awastha (the true origination of disease), so at the stage of Medovruddhi the vitiated dosha should be treated earlier before developing towards serious pathogenesis that is Sthoulya. The old sage “prevention is better than cure” holds true in case of obesity. Dietary measures play important role in management of lifestyle disorders like overweight (Medovruddhi) and obesity (Sthoulya). Yava (Barley) is a well known cereal used for Lekhana karma in regular diet since ancient days. So in present study this attempt was made by introducing Yava (Barley) for its weight reducing property in Medovruddhi (overweight) individuals and to prevent forthcoming disease Sthoulya (obesity).
