A CRITICAL REVIEW ON DIWASWAPNA (DAY SLEEP) AS A CAUSATIVE FACTOR OF DISEASE AND A TOOL FOR DISEASE MANAGEMENT

Abstract
Sleep is a matter of concern in the purview of healthy living. Despite
being an indispensable biological need for every individual, due to
ignorance human beings developed a tendency to practice it in an erred
way. Urbanization and altered job shift patterns intensify the altered
sleep patterns up to an extent. As per our traditions, Indians followed
an ideal way of sleep giving more importance to proper sleep in the
night. Across the Indian sub-continent one can observe the variations
in the sleep patterns based on the geographic features and seasonal
influences. Day sleep is often practiced now days in an improper way
leading to manifestation of serious health issues. If practiced properly
the same is going to be fruitful for human beings. Here comes the relevance of Ayurveda to
show light on sleep and related aspects salubriously. Thus Ayurveda includes sleep as one
among Trayopastambhas –the “three sub-pillars of life”. Understanding the judicious practice
of day sleep is the need of the hour in present era. Thus an attempt is made to incorporate the
radiant knowledge from Ayurveda literatures regarding the proper day sleep, to understand
and manage the diseases successfully.
