Abstract
The kidney is one of the most highly differentiated organs in the body.
The reduction in renal function observed in CKD results from damage
to the infrastructure of the kidney in discrete areas rather than
throughout the kidney. The main objective is to study the impact of
counseling and the Role of clinical pharmacists on quality of life of
hemodialysis patients. A cross sectional observational study was done
between case and control group, for a period of 6 months among the
patients on hemodialysis not less than 84 in number in which half of
the population was case and half was control. QOL is measured by
administering SF36 survey before counseling and after one month of
counseling. Health related quality of life in case group showed a consistent improvement in
one month and no significant improvement observed in control group. From the study, patient
counseling focusing on dialysis compliance, diet and medications were found to be an
effective way to improve health-related QoL and awareness in ESRD. Such services should
be made mandatory by law in India to improve outcomes in chronic illness.
Keywords: CKD, QoL, patient counseling, hemodialysis.
