AVABAHUKA: A CASE STUDY

Abstract
Vatavyadhis are the diseases caused due to vitiation of vata dosha.
They are of two types, viz.samanyaja and nanatmaja[1] i.e.diseases
mainly due to vatadosha along with other dosha and kevala vata dosha
respectively. Acharya Sushruta and others have considered avabahuka
as a vatajavikara. It is the disease that affects the ansa sandhi (shoulder
joint).In the pathology of this disease,vata and kapha together lead to
stambha in the joint.[2] Sheeta and ruksha guna of vata together leads to
sandhi stabdhata and hence patient is unable to move his shoulder joint
and there are restricted, painful movements of that joint. This paper is a
case study treated in the IPD of Rahuri Ayurved College and Hospital,
Rahuri. A male patient complaining of bilateral shoulder joint pain
with restricted movements was treated with Ayurvedic internal and
external therapies. Orally, punarnavashtaka kwatha with some other medicines was given.
Externally, snehana with Saidhavadi taila, nadisweda, patrapottali sweda was given. The
patient got relief from shoulder joint pain and degree of joint movement was improved. The
history of disease of patient with general examinations and details of treatment are discussed
in this case study.
