AMAVATA: A CASE STUDY
*Dr. Reena Goutam
Abstract Amavata is a chronic, progressive and crippling disorder caused by the impairment of Agni (digestive fire), formation of Ama(bio-toxin) and vitiation of Vata dosha. Amavata is produced mainly due to the vitiation of Vata along with the formation of Ama. The Ama combines with Vata dosha and occupies Shleshmasthana (Asthisandhi) which results in Amavata. Amavata can be correlated with Rheumatoid Arthritis due to similarities of clinical features. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic multisystem disease of unknown cause, although there are a variety of systemic manifestation, the characteristic feature of RA is persistent inflammatory synovitis, usually involving peripheral joints in a symmetric distribution. In modern medicine Steroides, Analgesics, Anti Inflammatory drugs, DMARD’s(disease modifying anti rheumatic drugs) are used which give only symptomatic relief and have serious side effects. Ayurveda treats it in a natural way without any side effects. Acharya Chakradutta mentioned chikitsa siddhant for management of Amavata which consists of Langhan, Swedana, use of dugs having tikta, katu rasa and deepan property, virechana, snehpana and basti. By using this chikitsa siddhant a case of Amavata was successfully treated. Marked improvement was observed in sign and symptoms after treatment. No any complications was found during the treatment.
