MANAGEMENT OF GRIDHRASI (SCIATICA) THROUGH AYURVEDIC THERAPY - A CASE REPORT

Abstract
Ayurveda classify Gridhrasi as one of diseases caused by
vitiation of Vata dosha. Sometimes still Kapha vitiation along
with Vata (vata kaphaj) also causes Gridhrasi. Ayurvedic treatments
for Gridhrasi focus on bringing back the aggravated Vata or Vata
Kapha to the state of equilibrium and there by to the state of health.
According to Acharya Charaka major cardinal symptoms of Gridhrasi
are pain, stiffness, and twitching over from lower back (Kati) to thighs
(Jangha), knees (Janu) and legs (Pada). Similarly, sciatica is usually
presented with the radiating type of low back pain and may be
associated with neurological deficits. Conventional treatment usually
advices analgesics, bed rest and physiotherapy for sciatica as per the condition. People who
have significant neurologic deficit might be advised for surgery. There is no such satisfactory
treatment for this disease in modern medicine, but in Ayurveda it can be treated to a much
greater extent. Here is a case report of 35 years female patient attended Kayachikitsa OPD of
AIIA with complaints of An acute pain in Right low back region and hip joint radiating from
hip to leg posteriorly since one year and associated numbness and tingling sensation over the
right lower limb since 15 days, difficulty in walking since 10 days, patient was taking
allopathic medicine but could not got relief, so she was admitted and treated with ayurvedic
treatment. Conclusion: The patient had been treated with Shodhan and Shaman medicines.
This case report shows that the classical Gridhrasi treatment with Sthanik Patra pinda
svedan, Kati basti and Matra basti with Pelvic Traction belt along with Shaman medicines is
very effective in Gridhrasi. The complaints of the patient were assessed with VAS, SLR test.
After the treatment, she got a marked improvement in his conditions.
