Abstract
Prameha being one among the Astamahagada involving dashadushya itself shows the graveness of the disease. In parlance Diabetes Mellitus can be considered vis-à-vis Prameha, as many of the pathognomonic factors and symptomatology imitate each other. Diabetes mellitus is the most common disease which is prevalent in every part of the world and is a major public challenge of 21st century. The prevalence of diabetes for all age-groups worldwide was estimated to be 2.8% in 2000 and 4.4% in 2030. The total number of people with diabetes is projected to rise from 171 million in 2000 to 366 million in 2030.[1] As per to Wild et al.[2] the prevalence of diabetes is projected to double globally from 171 million in 2000 to 366 million in 2030 with a maximum increase in India. It is predicted that by 2030 diabetes mellitus may afflict up to 79.4 million individuals in India, while China (42.3 million) and the United States (30.3 million) will also see significant increases in those affected by the disease.[3,4] All the Acharya stress on Atinidra and Avyayama as the nidana for prameha along with many other nidana related to food and activity. Acharya Vagbhata has coined the term “Shayanam Vidhivarjitam” specifically as a causative factor for Prameha.[5] All these vihara enhances Kapha dosha in body which is arambhaka hetu of prameha. By following nidana parivarjana, pursuing principles of swasthavritta and practising yogic techniques the prevention and management of the disease can be done in a better way.
