A CRITICAL REVIEW ON HYPERLIPIDEAEMIAS FROM AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE
Dr. B. Harinatha Chary* and Dr. Manu R.
Abstract Hyperlipidaemias means increase in the serum lipids.[1] It is considered to be a modifiable risk factor for Ischemic Heart Disease. This condition is becoming a burning problem in the present era because of its deleterious effects on human health. Since ages it has been dealing with a high cautious note by Ayurveda acharyas. All the conditions which have explained in Samhitas like Medo roga, Sthoulya and medodusti, postulates abnormal accumulation of medas (fats) in the body. In Ayurvedic classics two varieties of medas (badda and abadda) were explained. Badda medas which is stationary and settled in udara, spik and stana acts as poshaka dhatu. Abadda medas will be circulating in the entire body and acts as poshya dhatu. Lack of physical exercise, eating excess fatty food items and day time sleep lead to medo dusti. Same factors also contribute to abnormal accumulation of fats or lipids in the blood resulting in hyperlipidaemias. Basing on the physical nature and increase in their quantity by the same etiological factors both lipids and medas can be considered as one and the same. Hence, an attempt has been made in this paper to correlate abadha medas to the lipids leading to hyperlipidaemias. Keywords: Hyperlipidaemias, medo dusti, badda and abadda medas.
