Abstract
Introduction: Thiriloga chendooram is a Siddha Herbo Metallic
preparation predominately used for treatment of Iron deficiency
Anaemia, Oedema and Jaundice. Administration of Thiriloga
Chendooram (TC) without proper purification in human body may
lead to severe complications. Hence the main aim of the work is to
study the toxic effects of short term and long term administration of
Thiriloga Chendooram (TC). Methods: The acute oral toxicity study
was performed in Wistar albino rats of 6 groups and each group
consisting of 5 rats at 1ml of suspension containing doses ranging from
40-640mg of Thiriloga Chendooram. Animals were observed at the end of 24 hours. The
Chronic toxicity study into 3 groups each group consisting of 5 rats. The preparation was
done in such a way so as 1 ml of suspension contained 40mg and 80mg of the drug and was
administered for 90 days. Results: In acute toxicity study did not produce any mortality even
up to 640 mg/body weight of the animal. In chronic toxicity study As per findings of long
term administration of Thiriloga Chendooram in the dose level of 40mg, 80mg/100gm body
weight of the animals produced had not any remarkable tissue changes to liver, kidney except
mild interstitial odema and haemorrhages in heart at the dose level of 40mg & 80mg
administered animals. Conclusion: Thiriloga Chendooram was found to be Safe upto
640mg/body weight of the animals. There was no mortality observed and ensures the safety
nature of the drug.
