Abstract
In recent years, significant interest has been shown in the
development of novel bioadhesive dosage forms for mucosal delivery
of drugs that attempt to overcome these limitations. In this review,
authors have described oral drug delivery, factor affecting buccal drug
delivery and its relevance to new developments.
Authors have tried to expand the knowledge of mucoadhesion, its
mechanism, various mucoadhesive polymers as well as importance of
mucoadhesion in buccal drug delivery systems. It has been well
established that mucoadhesive buccal dosage forms are providing
better bioavailability of the drug as compared to conventional oral
solid dosage forms viz. tablets, capsules.
Keywords: Buccal drug delivery, mucoadhesion, bioadhesion.
