ZINC RECOVER HISTOLOGICAL STRUCTURE ON CADMIUM TOXICITY INDUCED IN INTESTINE OF THE FRESHWATER CATFISH HETEROPNUESTES FOSSILIS (BLOCH)
Shruti Kumari and K. D. Ahirrao*
Abstract This study reports the curative effect of zinc on cadmium induced to pathological change in intestine of the fresh water catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis. Exposure of the fish to 16.14 mg/l sub lethal concentration of cadmium for 30 days induced hyperplasia of circular muscle cell and sub-mucosa, hyperactive mucous cells and lymphocytic infiltration in lamina propria, serosal disintegration, autolysins longitudinal and circular muscle fibers, oedema in sub-mucosa, ruptured tips of villi & fusion of adjacent villi, disintegration of villi and columnar epithelial lining. However 16.14mg/l cadmium 0.5mg/l zinc exposed fish groups revealed signs of recovery of architecture and structure of villi, columnar epithelial cells, mucous secreting cells and sub mucosa and reveling restoration of normalcy of submucosal and mucosal fold after zinc supplementation. Our studies find that zinc recovers the effect from cadmium toxicity. Keywords: Recovery, Zinc, Cadmium, Intestine, Histopathology Heteropnuestes fossilis.
