Abstract

CONCEPT OF MUSCULO SKELETON DISODERS AND IT’S TREATMENT IN PANCHKARMA

Vd. Silvia Bharti* and Dr. Veenu Malhotra

Abstract

Musculoskeletal conditions are the second largest contributor to disability worldwide, with low back pain being the single leading cause of disability globally. Musculoskeletal conditions and injuries are not just conditions of older age, they are relevant across the life course. Between one in three and one in five people live with a pair full and disabling musculoskeletal condition. Musculoskeletal conditions significantly limit mobility and dexterity, leading to early retirement from work, reduced accumulated wealth and reduced ability to participate in social roles. The greatest proportion of persistent pain conditions is accounted for by musculoskeletal conditions. Highly prevalent among multi-morbidity health states, musculoskeletal conditions are prevalent in one third to one half of multi-morbidity presentations, and very commonly linked with depression. Musculoskeletal conditions comprise more than 150 diagnoses that affect the locomotor system – that is, muscles, bones, joints and associated tissues such as tendons and ligaments, as listed in the International Classification of Diseases. Whenever Vata Dosha (the humor called Vata in Ayurveda) gets vitiated it at first enters in all Srotases (the empty channels) of the body and then creates different types of Vata disorders described in classical Ayurvedic texts including Musculoskeletal disorders like Ardita (Facial Paralysis), Pakshaghata (Hemiplegia), MamsaShosa/Kshaya (Muscular Dystrophy), Joint Disorders (SandhiVata, AmaVata, Vatarakta etc.), AsthiShosa/Kshaya (Osteoporosis.), Myopathy etc. The classical treatments in Musculoskeletal disorders, like various Panchakarma (five purification procedures in Ayurveda) therapies preceded by Snehana & Swedana which are used for relaxation as well as giving tone to the muscles & for promoting the blood circulation and Mriduvirechana with various Basti Karmas are very much beneficial which pacifies the provoked Vata Dosha, increases strength of the person, maintains health & longevity. An attempt has been made to review the treatment procedures in Ayurveda with reference to Vatavyadhi.

Keywords: Vata vyadhi, Basti Karmas, MSD, Mriduvirechana.
