Abstract

Aims: Anthelmintic and inflammation are corelated with various pathological conditions. Finding for natural healing agents with a better safety profile for treating of these conditions are ongoing due to multiple unwanted effects associated with synthetic pharmaceuticals. Therefore the aim of this study was to evaluate the anthelminthic and anti-inflammatory activities of the Rhynchotechum ellipticum of the leaves and stem. Methods: The anthelmintic activity carried out on adult earthworm Paramphistomum cervi due to its anatomical and physiological resemblance with the intestinal roundworm parasites of human beings, whereas anti-inflammatory activity was determined by Carrageenan induced paw edema test. Results: Leaf and stem extracts showed at doses 150 mg/ml significant effect which has paralysis time 22.0 and 27.4 minutes and death time 26.0 and 38.6 minutes; respectively. On the other hand, the reference standard albendazole showed paralysis time at 15.0 minutes and death at 15.8 minutes. The acetonic extracts showed Anti-inflammatory action compared to the reference indomethacin 5.13, 5.18 and 5.08, 4.93mm for leaf stem were found to exhibit antiinflammatory activity induced in mice at dose level, 100 and 200 mg/kg/day body weight; respectively. Conclusion: It can be revealed that the extract of Rhynchotechum ellipticum (Gesneriaceae) possess anthelmintic and anti inflammatory activity. The potential of these activities may be due to the presence of most of the phytochemicals which supports previous claims and validate its uses as an expected folk medicine.

Keywords: Rhynchotechum ellipticum, Paramphistomum cervi, Albendazole, Indomethacin, Carrageenan.
