EVALUATION OF ANTI-MICROBIAL ACTIVITIES OF SIDDHA FORMULATION ATHTHIKKAI CHOORANAM
Chandraprabhu M.* and A. Manoharan
Abstract The aim of the study is to detect the anti-microbial efficacy of Siddha formulation Aththikkai Chooranam (Ficus racemosa Linn). The test formulation Aththikkai chooranam AC was screened for anti – microbial activity in various extracts like aqueous & methanol. The studies were carried out in 50 µl and 100µl concentrations in each extracts against MTCC strains of 5 G+ve, 5G-ve bacterium and 5 fungi. AC was highly sensitive in Staphylococcus aureus (15, 18 mm), Enterococcus faecalis (13, 16mm), Streptococcus mutans (10, 15mm), Bacillus subtilis (12, 16mm), Kliebsiella pneumonia (14, 17mm), E.coli (10, 14mm), Proteus mirabilis (13, 16mm) in methanol extract at 50µl and 100µl. The inhibitory actions for bacteria were compared with standard drug streptomycin. AC was highly sensitive in Candida albicans and less sensitive in Aspergillus niger, Penicillium notatum respectively. Their action were compared to standard anti-fungal drug Fluconazole. Siddha formulation AC can be employed in the management of super opportunistic infections in diabetes mellitus patients.
