FORMULATION AND IN VITRO EVALUATION OF GLIPIZIDE FLOATING BEADS BY USING VARIOUS POLYMERS
M. Nagaraju and G. Ravi*
Abstract Glipizide is a second generation sulphonylurea with promising hypoglycaemic activity. It acts by stimulating the release of insulin from β-cells of pancreas. It is generally well tolerated and categorized as BCS class II drug due to poor water solubility and good permeability. The objective of the present investigation was to develop an extended release (ER) beads formulation of glipizide by employing various polymers. The prepared beads were evaluated for various parameters like dissolution, floating time, In vitro drug release study was carried out. The dissolution profiles of an ideal formulation (ER F2) containing HPMCK100 and sodium alginate was found to be desired formulation. The dissolution of ER F2 was done using 7.4 PH buffer and temperature 37±0.5 °C at 275 nm wave length. In conclusion, ER formulation of Glipizide was sufficiently developed employing rate-controlling polymer. Keywords: Glipizide, BCS Class II, HPMCK100 and sodium alginate.
