EFFECT OF LIFESTYLE MODIFICATIONS AND YOGA IN PRE HYPERTENSION PATIENTS

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the leading causes of the global burden of diseases, Approximately 7.6 million deaths (13-15% of the total) and 92 million disability adjusted life years worldwide were attributed to high blood pressure in 2001. Level of Blood pressure increases with age and the prevalence of hypertension vary among countries and among subpopulations within a country. Pre hypertension is defined as Systolic Blood pressure between 120-139 mmHg while diastolic Blood Pressure between 80-89 mmHg. Pre hypertension is associated with increased end organ damage compared with individuals who are normotensive. The prevalence of pre hypertension in India was found more than 45% (of the 2,007 people studied, 47.4% had Pre hypertension and 34.7% had hypertension. Pre hypertension was found in 46.6% of the men and 49.8% of the women). Pre hypertension has been shown to increase future risk of hypertension In Pre hypertension patients lifestyle modifications are advised. If the pre hypertensive patients are controlled, these patients may be prevented from development of hypertension. So a clinical study is performed on pre hypertension patients to see the combined effect of Lifestyle modifications and yoga. In this study significant decrease in systolic as well as diastolic blood pressure were seen in pre hypertension patients.
