Abstract
This study was aimed at evaluating the effects of the ethyl acetate root
extract of S. jollyanum on the concentrations of sera total proteins,
albumin, total bilirubin and glucose in rats. Twenty albino male rats
were used for the study and divided into five groups (groups A - E) of
four rats each. Group A served as the normal control while Groups B-E
were made diabetic and group B treated with the standard anti-diabetic
drug (glibenclamide at the dose of 5 mg/kg body weight). Group C
represented the untreated diabetic rats. Groups D and E were treated
with the 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight of the extract respectively.
The study lasted for 14 days. After the 14th day, the rats were
sacrificed and the blood samples collected via ocular puncture for the
determination of the concentrations of the afore-listed parameters. The
results showed that there were significant (p
