NUTRITION AND DIETARY CONSIDERATIONS IN WOUND HEALING

Abstract Since the ancient times wound healing is a burning problem in surgery because of increase in the number of traumatic cases. Mankind has been susceptible to injury from starting of civilization. The term Vrana in Ayurveda resembles wound of modern science. Nutrition and diet plays a major role in the process of wound healing. Acharya Sushruta called as father of surgery has mentioned in Sushruta samhita about the diet to be taken by the person suffering from wound. In modern era, treating wound with antibiotics and local management is not sufficient for proper healing of wound. Vrana is widely described in Sushruta Samhita as a separate chapter. More importance is given to wound healing and for wound management he has mentioned Shasti upkramas along with diet to be followed for better healing of wound. Nutritional deficiencies like protein, vitamin A, zinc deficiency etc. retards wound healing process grossly. In general good nutrition is important for wound healing.
