GENERIC DRUGS CHALLENGES IN INDIAN CURRENT SCENARIO: A REVIEW

Abstract
A generic drug is a pharmaceutical drug that contains the same chemical substance as a drug that was originally protected by chemical patents. Generics are available at a lower cost; they provide an opportunity for savings in drug expenditure in a country. An abbreviated new drug application (ANDA) to be submitted by the pharmaceutical companies to the regulatory authorities for getting the approval to market a generic drug. There are several issues and challenges related to the distribution of generic drugs in India which results in lower level of adoption of pharmacy products drugs in the country. To address some of these challenges, the Government of India and some states in India have launched schemes or programs that aims to provide quality medicines at affordable prices to the masses all over country through special centres, The Jan Aushadhi Scheme and The Rajasthan Medical Services Corporation Limited. A 4āEā (Education, Engineering, Economics, and Enforcement) methodology isproposed for promoting generic drug utilization and development in India. If sponsors, healthcare providers, and regulators work together effectively, then effective use of generic drugs will make medical costs cheaper and also ensure sound treatment options for the patients.
