Abstract
Vatsanabha is a potent toxic drug explained by Bruhat trayees, and
they have considered it under Mahavisha(Potent toxin). Acharya
Sushruta mentioned it under Moola visha(Poisonous roots). It is
considered to be potent cardiac poison used for homicidal or suicidal
purpose. In this present study acute oral toxicity of drug Vatsanabha
after the Shodhana (Purifactor method) has been carried out. Acharyas
have explained various methods for Shodhana, and thereby used it in
much Ayurvedic formulation. Purification procedure was carried out
with Gomutra(Cow’s Urine) for 3 days. The present study was done on
Wistar albino rats. After the Shodhana of drug Vatsanabha, albino rats
were subjected to oral toxicity study. There was a decrease in central
nervous activity, and later rats were died due to respiratory
failure. It’s very significant to know the LD 50 drug Shodhita Vatsanabha since it is used in
various ayurvedic formulations.
