Abstract
Background: Pharmacological evaluation of sponge extracts was
carried out through the screening of analgesic activity, anticonvulsant
activity, neurotoxicity studies, anti- inflammatory activity, diuretic
strength and antioxidant activity of experimented animals after
administration of specific sponge extracts. Materials and methods:
To compare the pharmacological efficacy studies, five potent sponges
were selected such as Haliclona. exigua, Axinella. donnani,
Callyspongia, Sigmadocia and Dendrilla. nigra. Animal models were
selected for the successful pharmacological screening of sponge
extracts. Albino mice from Kings Institute, Guindy were used as the
animal model throughout the screening studies. The lethal dose of sponge extracts determined
prior to pharmacological evaluation. The toxicity studies were carried as per OECD
guidelines 423. Results: By neurotoxic evaluation of five selected sponge extracts, H. exigua
exhibit effective neurotoxic potency. Of the five sponge extracts administered mice groups,
H. exigua extracts received groups showed in effect analgesic action. By equating five
sponge extracts, H. exigua extracts administered mice group exhibited potent anticonvulsant
action similar to reference drug, Diazepam in all three screening methods. H. exigua extracts
and control drug, diclofenac sodium administered mice groups exhibited more antiinflammatory
efficacy than other sponge extracts administered mice group. H. exigua
administered mice group produced effective diuretic potential resemble diuretic drug
administered mice groups. Amongst five sponge extracts, H. exigua administered mice group produced a profound effect on antioxidant activity. Conclusion: The above pharmacological screening output clearly indicated that H.exigua extracts exhibited more potent in all aspects. The pharmacological potential of H.exigua revealed the presence of an active ingredient in the current drug development strategy.
