Abstract

The increasing prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has become an issue of serious public health concern.[1] Smoking and environmental pollution are the main causative factors of the disease. COPD has become the second biggest cause of death. In modern medical science, apart from bronchodilators steroids are also frequently used for the management of COPD. But with their prolonged use many untoward effects are inevitable. Numbers of herbal drugs are effectively used by the Ayurvedic experts in the management of this disease and Kulthyadi Guda is one among them. Present study has been planned to clinically assess the efficacy of Kuthyadi Guda in the management of COPD. In present clinical study twenty three enrolled study subjects who qualified diagnostic and inclusion criteria were studied under two groups. In group-I patients were managed with Kulthyadi Guda (400 mg/kg per day in two equal divided doses) and Haritaki Churna (5gm per day) while in group-II patients were advised to take same drugs which were given in first group and additionally they were advised to do Yogic breathing exercises for 20 minutes twice a day. Duration of trial was 45 days. Overall effect of therapy on subjective parameters revealed that 66.67% patients showed marked improvement and 33.33% patients showed moderate improvement in trial group-I while in trial group-II 77.78% patients were markedly improved and 22.22% patients showed moderate improvement in symptoms. Overall effects of therapy on objective criteria in group-I revealed marked improvement in 22.22% patients and moderate improvement in 33.33% patients. 11.11% patients showed no improvement and rest of the patient showed deterioration. Whereas in trial Group-II 77.78% patients were markedly improved and 22.22% patients showed moderate improvement. None of the patient remained unimproved or deteriorated. The therapy given in group -II i.e. Kulthyadi Guda along with Yogic Breathing Exercises has shown better results over the therapy given in group-I where the patients were managed only with Kulthyadi guda. Hence it can be concluded that Kulthyadi Guda along with Yogic Breathing Exercises can be used effectively to improve the ventilatory functions as well as symptoms in the patients of COPD.
