Abstract

THE IN-VITRO ANTI-INFLAMMATORY AND ANTI-HAEMOLYTIC ACTIVITY OF THE STEM BARK METHANOL EXTRACT OF KHAYA SENEGALENSIS

Joshua Akwayamai John* and Gideon Henry Bulama

Abstract

Plants have been in use as medicines for the treatment of human diseases since ages gone by, this is because of the fact that they have chemical components of medicinal potency. Khaya senegalensis is a useful tree in Africa. It is treasured for its timber, fuel wood and medicinal purposes. This research work examined the antiinflammatory and anti-hemolytic activities of K senegalensis by invitro model a confirmatory model to in-vivo model. Results showed that Methanol stem bark extract of K senegalensis contains some secondary metabolites such as; saponins, tannins, flavonoids, terpenoids, steroids, glycosides, phenols, alkaloids, proteins. K senegalensis methanol extract at 250-500 μg/ml significantly (p<0.05) inhibited the heat induced albumin denaturation, with 76.01 ± 0.31, 78.02 ± 0.23 inhibition rate respectively in comparison with the standard drug with an inhibition action of 84.21 ± 0.32, 88.10 ± 0.11 respectively. At 250 and 500 μg/ml, K senegalensis showed significant (p<0.05) inhibition of, 75.10 ± 0.32, 80.00 ± 0.11 comparatively with the standard drug with maximum inhibition of proteinase action of about, 85.30 ± 0.21, 95.00 ± 0.17. Heat-induced haemolysis of RBSc. was significantly (p<0.05) inhibited at 250 and 500 μg/ml with a maximum inhibition of, 68.01 ± 0.25, 83.10±0.33 comparatively with the standard drug with inhibition rate of 61.00 ± 0.19, 89.00 ± 0.35. Hypotonicity induced haemolysis activity was significantly (p<0.05) inhibited at 250-500 μg/ml respectively, the extract showed an inhibition rate of 91.02 ± 0.31, 93.10 ± 0.21 in comparison with the standard drug with an inhibition rate of, 94.20±0.35, 97.01 ± 0.32. These results indicated that the extract of k senegalensis can be a potential source of anti-inflammatory agent.

Keywords: SAIDs and NASIDs, Khaya senegalensis, Diclofenac, Inflammation, Haemolysis.
