Vidya N. V.*, Bineesh E. P. and Dr. D. B. Vaghela

Abstract

Background: Dry eye is a condition in which a person doesn't have enough quality tears to lubricate and nourish the eye. Tears are necessary for maintaining the health of the front surface of the eye and for providing clear vision. Dry eye is a common and often chronic problem, particularly in older adults. With each blink of the eyelids, tears spread across the front surface of the eye, known as the cornea. Tears provide lubrication, reduce the risk of eye infection, wash away foreign matter in the eye and keep the surface of the eyes smooth and clear. Dry eye syndrome is a common multy factorial problem with increasing worldwide prevalence, producing symptoms of discomfort, visual disturbances and tear film instability[1], Shushkakshipaka an etymologically and clinically similar entity to DES (Dry Eye Syndrome) is a sarvagata netra roga[2] i.e. the disease affecting all parts of eye. It has been categorized as an Aushadha sadhya vyadhi[3] i.e. curable by medication. In the present study drug Shunthyadi Aschyotana has shown encouraging clinical outcome in Shushkakshipaka (Dry Eye). Aim: To analyze the pharmaceutical evaluation of Shunthyadi Aschyotana. Materials and method: A literature search was carried out pertaining to Dry Eye Syndrome and Shushkakshipaka, Final product was subjected to pharmaceutical analysis such as physico-chemical parameters Specific gravity, Acid Value, Refractive index, Iodine Value, Saponification value etc. Result: Physico chemical constants like pH, loss on drying, ash value, water soluble extract, HPTLC(High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography ) where evaluated. Conclusion: The present work was carried out to standardize the finished product of Shunthyadi Aschyotana in terms of its identity quality and purity. Physico chemical observations revealed the specific characters of all active constituents used in the preparation.

Keywords: HPTLC, Pharmaceutical physico-chemical parameters, Shunthyadi Aschyotana, Shushkakshipaka, Dry Eye.
