Abstract
Crinum latifolium are is a rosette-like herb with umbels of lily-like flowers. They are found in tropical and subtropical regions throughout the world. These have been used traditionally to cure ailments and diseases for centuries. Sometimes, they are prescribed for the same medicinal purpose. Phytochemical analysis has recently yielded a vast array of compounds, including more than 20 different alkaloids. These are of the Amaryllidaceae type, whose most noted effects are: analgesic, tonic, rubefacient, for treatment of allergic disorders, benign prostatic hyperplasia and antiviral. Even though much has been reported on the medicinal properties of Crinum latifolium, only an estimated 5% of the species worldwide are represented in these analyses, as reviewed in this paper for phytochemical and pharmacological potential.
