Abstract

NOVEL UTILIZATION AND PHYTOPHARMACOLOGICAL REVIEW OF MULTIPOTENTIAL TRADITIONAL PLANT LIMONIA ACIDISSIMA

Abstract

Current research on drug development has emphasized on traditional uses of herbal constituents which were practiced in ancient times. Ayurveda, one of the oldest medicinal systems in the world, provides leads for a vast number of therapeutically useful compounds. The combination of traditional and modern knowledge can produce better source of the active constituents for the treatment of diseases with fewer side effects. India is a rich source of many underutilized medicinal plants that possess the potential to treat diverse human aliments and diseases. Among them, Limonia acidissima is an indigenous plant of India which has been used in the folk medicine of the Indian traditional system since prehistoric times. The plant is an angiosperm with multifaceted medicinal properties almost every part of it is used traditionally. Recently, extensively scientific studies have validated its ethnomedicinal properties and a variety of bioactive compounds in different parts of plant. The leaves, bark, stem, fruits and seeds are used extensively in Ayurvedic medicine. Although, its fruits are most commonly used for food products as murabba, puddings and fresh juice but the fruit pulp possesses broad range of therapeutic effects also, which includes free radical scavenging, antioxidant, inhibition of lipid peroxidation, antibacterial, antiviral, anti diarrheal, hepatoprotective, antidiabetic, cardioprotective and radioprotective effects. The outcome of this review provides concise knowledge on pharmacological effects and possible mechanisms which are essential for developing therapeutic uses of the fruit pulp, bark and leaves. Also Novel application of fruits shell. This review summarizes the morphology, Cultivation, Physicochemical and quality standard parameter, nutritional values, phytochemistry, therapeutic activities and Novel utilization of the different parts of plant that has been largely underutilized and neglected.
