Abstract Active pharmaceutical ingredients and pharmaceutical excipients are the core of any pharmaceutical preparation. API‘s are responsible for the therapeutic activity while excipients are non-pharmacological ingredients which are used in the manufacturing of pharmaceutical preparations. Chitosan is a polysaccharide that contains many polar functionalities like amino and OH (hydroxyl) groups, which make the polymer hydrophilic and amenable to forming 3-D structures. Chitosan-based hydrogels are capable of absorbing large quantities of water while retaining structural features. Using a variety of strategies based on ionic, polyelectrolyte, chemical modification, and interpenetrating network techniques, chitosan-based hydrogels have been designed and investigated to deliver therapeutics to the site of action in a controlled manner. In this review we present an overview of hydrogels that have recently been developed and when possible provide a discussion relevant to their mechanism of action. Keywords: Polymer, Chitosan, Hydrogel, Biofilm. [Full Text Article] [Download Certificate] |
