Abstract

The present study highlights the pharmacological evaluation of antispasmodic effect of Michelia champaca stem bark of the family Magnoliaceae. Michelia champaca is a tall tree with lot of potential medicinal uses. It was used in gout, arthritis, in various skin diseases, as anti-hypourecimic, antioxidant, anthelmintic, diuretic, antimicrobial etc. The phytochemical screening of stembark shows the presence of flavonoids, steroids, cardiac glycosides and reducing sugars.. Antispasmodic effect was done on chicken ileum by using acetyl choline induced spasm. The effect of aqueous and methanolic extracts on Ach induced spasm on chicken ileum was carried out using standard drug atropine, which is an antispasmodic drug. Both the extract shown marked decrease in spasm of ileum in which aqueous extract is predominant. Action of steroids on M3 and H1 receptors in the chicken ileum and antioxidant action of quercetin contribute to the effect. Thus in the present study the plant Michelia champaca shows good antiurolithiatic activity and promising antispasmodic effect.
