ASSESSMENT OF RATIONAL USE OF ANTIBIOTICS IN TWO TERTIARY HOSPITAL

Abstract
Background: Irrational use of antibiotics may be harmful or even may threaten to life of a patient. Over use or misuse of antibiotics is an important cause for irrational use. Objective: This study has been design to get a picture of use of antibiotics in two tertiary care hospital of Bangladesh. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at outpatient department (OPD) of North Bengal Medical College Hospital (NBMCH) and Shaheed M Monsur Ali Medical College Hospital (SMMAMCH), Sirajgonj, Bangladesh during the period of July 2017 to June 2019. A total number of 1522 prescriptions, 761 from each hospital were collected randomly form different disciplines of OPD of these two hospitals. Results: Four hundred fifty five out of 761 prescriptions contain 786 antibiotics (23.46%) of NBMCH prescriptions and 287 prescriptions out of 761 prescriptions contain 293 antibiotics (13.07%) of SMMAMCH. Among 455 prescriptions of NBMCH, 42 (9.23%) prescriptions were found irrational. But out of 287 prescriptions of SMMAMCH, 23 (8.01%) were found irrational. Conclusion: Continuous monitoring should be necessary to reduce the irrational use of antibiotics.
