Abstract
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease (COPD) is a respiratory condition that is characterized by symptoms that includes dyspnoea, cough and or sputum production A 35 year old female patient came with complaints of lethargy, unwillingness towards performing domestic chores, easy fatigability, shortness of breath on walking almost 10 minutes at her own pace, cough with occasional sputum production during season change since 1 year along with bilateral wheezing during the expiratory phase at the lower lobe. History revealed that she was a known case of chronic bronchitis from past 3 years and was under medication: Deriphyllin retard 150mg since 1year and nebulization with Levolin respules 0.63 mg twice a day since 6 months. The patient did not get any long term effect with the past medication and felt symptomatic relief for short durations. Due to indifference, she stopped the oral medication 3 months ago and continued the nebulization till date. Guda-Ardrak yoga (Ginger-Jaggery electuary) was administrated in Kalpa (customized Ayurvedic regimen) manner for 19 days along with milk. This kalpa showed improvement in degree of breathlessness from Grade II to Grade I, absence of bilateral wheeze, and reduction in frequency of use of nebulization and improvement in subjective measures like willingness towards performing daily domestic activities, improved appetite and vigour. Follow up of 15 days was maintained to check the tenability of the outcome and no episode of exacerbation was reported. This case study demonstrates that Guda-Ardrak kalpa is an effective treatment regimen for COPD.
