Abstract
Vatarakta is a disease which is caused by vitiated vata and rakta dhatu. Vitiated vata obstructs the path of vitiated rakta in the beginning & then afterwards both rakta & vata gets vitiated due to its sukshma, saraguna and spreads all over the body. Firstly, it gets saturated near the joint of 1st toe (the big toe) of any foot & create symptoms like mild inflammation, skin discolouration, slight warmth etc. According to modern sciences gout-a complex form of arthritis also shows similar symptoms. Gout is a heterogenous disorder that results in deposition of uric acid, salts, crystals in & around the joints & soft tissues, which ultimately cause inflammation and intense pain. Modern medical science fails to give an answer on treatment for gout completely & permanently. But through Ayurveda depending upon the stage of disease i.e. (uttan /gambhira avastha) with the help of viddhakarma which is a modified type of raktamokshana termed as ardha-chikitsa by Acharya sushrut, we can treat gout which comes under the preview of vatarakta. Here, an effort was made to treat a 54year old male patient with increased serum uric acid, serum calcium levels & continuous throbbing pain, inflammation, redness in his left toe using viddhakarma (4 settings of 3 days/week) & only internal medication of Guduchi ghana vati (Dosage:1 BD) for a month. After a month of treatment serum uric acid levels decreased so was the symptoms in patient were decreased.
