PHYTOCHEMICAL, ANTIOXIDANT AND CYTOTOXIC ACTIVITY OF LEAF AND BULB EXTRACTS OF CRINUM DEFIXUM

Abstract

Amyryllidaceae family is well known for its medicinal potential, In this study phytochemical, cytotoxic, antioxidant potential of leaf and bulb of Crinum defixum was explored. Four solvent extracts of both the parts were prepared these were hexane, chloroform, acetone and methanol. Leaf extracts exhibited the presence of flavonoids where as bulb extracts consisted of terpenoids, saponins and flavonoids. Antioxidant values of leaf extracts using DPPH radical scavenging assay and TLC based assay was higher as compared to the bulb extracts, whereas bulb extracts were rich in cytotoxic potential. A very significant 91% cytotoxic activity was shown by the chloroform extract of bulb followed by 75% activity of acetone extract of the leaf extracts. Overall leaf and bulb extracts showed variable medicinal potential, leaf extracts were rich in antioxidant potential whereas bulb extract had significant cytotoxic activity.
