VITAMIN B12 DEFICIENCY IN PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS: A CROSS SECTIONAL STUDY

Abstract
Introduction: The diabetes mellitus is a common disease with the
prevalence of type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is 8.3% of the world
population and 11.77% of Pakistani population. Metformin is the
prototype drug for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus and
may be result into vitamin B12 deficiency with the use in a long time;
It inhibits the calcium dependent channels in the last portion of the
ileum resulting into malabsorption of vitamin B12. Objective: vitamin
B12 deficiency in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Setting &
Duration: Medicine OPD, Bolan Medical Complex Hospital/ BMCH
Quetta from 16/10/2018 to 16/10/2019. Materials and Methods: This cross sectional study
was conducted at Bolan Medical College/hospital Quetta, in the current study a total of 174
patients were observed. Detail history, clinical examination and laboratory investigation was
performed for the confirmation of diabetes mellitus. Results: In the current study mean age
was 51 years with SD ± 10.59. Forty four percent patients were male while 56% patients
were female. Mean duration of diabetes was 15 years with SD ± 11.93. More over 19%
patients had vitamin B12 deficiency while 81% patients didn’t have vitamin B12 deficiency.
Conclusion: Our study concludes that the frequency of vitamin B12 deficiency was 19% in
patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
