ROLE OF NISHA LAUHA VATI IN PANDU ROGA (IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA) - A CLINICAL STUDY

Abstract
Pandu roga is a rasa pradoshaj Vikara. Pitta is the main dosa in the
manifestation of Pandu roga. The main characteristic features of the
disease is Panduthwa i.e. pallor. The clinical features of anemia like
pallor, weakness, giddiness, etc are similar with Pandu roga mentioned
in Ayurvedic classics. According to WHO Global Database on
Anemia- “Worldwide Prevalence of Anemia 1993-2005, it affects 1.62
billion people which correspond to 24.8% of the population.[1]
Globally, iron deficiency ranks number 9 among 26 risk factors
included in the GBD 2000, and accounts for 841,000 deaths and
35,057,000 disability-adjusted life years lost.[2] In 2013, 1.2 billion
people are affected due to (IDA). In 2013, death due to Anemia (IDA)
is about 183000 which is down from 213000 death in 1990.[3] The management of Anemia
includes various oral iron preparations, but these oral iron preparations have various side
effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, metallic taste etc.[4] Ayurveda has lots
to offer for the treatment of Pandu Roga. Out of several herbal & herbomineral preparations
mentioned in Ayurvedic classics, Nisha Lauha Vati was selected. For this purpose total 20
patients were registered. The patients were assessed on subjective & haematological
parameters for obtaining the effect of drug. All clinical sign & symptoms were assessed on
the basis of scoring given to them. Duration of clinical trial was of three months & all the patients were regularly followed up twice in a month to evaluate the therapeutic effect of the trial drugs.
