Abstract

VACCINE IN HEALTHCARE: AN INDIAN SCENARIO

Abstract

India has got distinct advantage of having large population including animals and hence the issue related with human and veterinary vaccine are addressed in the present article. The issue of pre-clinical trials is also tapped. Thrust has been given to the issue of vaccines for TB, Malaria and HIV/AIDS since these diseases are more significant from Indian persepectives. Without strengthening the research and innovation, India cannot emerge as a leader in the vaccine market. Therefore, thrust is also given to the R&D work in vaccine technologies. Patenting in vaccine technology is also weaved in the article. India is a hot and humid country and therefore, the issue of storage, distribution and transportation of vaccine is important and stress has been given to these topic. It is also suggested that masses can be reached more effective immunization by sending messages via the use of mobile phone in educating the Indian population in their regional languages. The responsibilities of regulatory authority in vaccine technology is given a stress in the current article. India has to focus on Pharmacovigilance in vaccine technology, so that issues related with detection, assessment understanding, prevention and communication of adverse events following immunization or of any other vaccine or immunization-related issues are addressed in this article. The Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) and Medical council of india must incorporate detailed study of vaccine in the academic curriculum of pharmacy and medicine, so that the future graduates are vaccine ready scientists. The Government must initiate the activities to bridge the gap between Industry-Academic-Regulatory by organizing seminars/workshops at regional levels. In nutshell, The article covers the current scenario, SWOT analysis, factors influence the growth of vaccine sector in india, perspective in terms of Research Innovation, Patenting, Production and Potential of vaccine and future efforts to improve the healthcare of poor countries in Asia and Africa.
