Abstract
Plant derived medicine are widely used in traditional cultures all over
the world their use ranges the production of mainstream
pharmaceutical products to herbal medicine preparations. The result of
the study revealed that the secondary metabolites such as alkaloids,
saponins, flavanoids, phytosterol, phenol and tannins, terpenoids,
coumarins, cardiac glycoside and carbohydrates were present in the
leaf extracts of Sphagneticola trilobata. The maximum phenolic
content was found to in the aqueous extract (57.93mg/g) of
Sphagneticola trilobata. The maximum flavanoid content was found in
the ethyl acetate extract of Sphagneticola trilobata. In DPPH free
radical scavenging assay, the mean IC50 values of methanolic extracts
and ethyl acetate extract of Sphagneticola trilobata was lower which showed that the radical
scavenging activity was showed to be effective in these solvent extracts (53.41 and 70 μg/ ml
respectively). In in-vitro antidiabetic assay, it was found that the methanolic extract of
Sphagneticola trilobata showed significant activity.
