BIRTH WEIGHT OF BABY AND ASSOCIATED MATERNAL FACTORS IN SURI TOWN OF BIRBHUM DISTRICT OF WEST BENGAL

Abstract
Background: The low birth weight (LBW) is considered as sensitive
index of nation’s health and development. Almost a third of the new
born in the south east Asia region is low birth weight. The cause of
Low Birth Weight is multi factorial and birth weight is determined by
both socio demographic and biological factors. Aims and objective:
To find out the prevalence of low birth weight babies among
institutional deliveries and its association with socio-cultural and
maternal risk factor. Materials and methods: A hospital based crosssectional
study was undertaken comprising of 78 postnatal mothers
along with singleton live born baby delivered in Suri Sadar Hospital,
Birbhum, west Bengal during the study period of June 2019. Result: out of 78 respondents,
the prevalence of LBW was 57.9%. The risk factors like maternal BMI, mother’s age,
mother’s educational level, parity were found to be statistically significant. Conclusion:
Socio-cultural and maternal risk factors like BMI, mother’s age, mothers’ educational level
were found to be significantly associated with the birth weight babies. The prevalence of low
birth weight is highest in.
