Abstract

Cigarette smoking carries major health risk with most being those of respiratory and cardiovascular disease. It has been reported that tobacco kills more than 1 million people each year in India, and contribute 9.5 % of all the deaths. Smoking can cause lung disease by damaging airway and the small air sacs (alveoli) found in lungs. Peak expiratory flow rate is a physiological test that measures how an individual inhales or exhales volumes of air as function of time. Lung volumes are measured to evaluate the normality of respiratory function. Dhoomapana is very effective in prevention of disease, promotion of health and treatment of Urdhvajatrugata Roga. In the present study, we found that PEFR (Peak Expiratory flow rate) was increased significantly in cigarette smokers. The value of Eosinophil will also show higher range in cigarette smokers. Ayurvedic Dhoompana to the subject after that there is little drop in the Eosinophil blood count. Which suggest good response to the inflammation of lung pathology. Dhoomapan will helpful to reduces Shortness of breath with 46 % relief in habitual smokers. The Ayurvedic Dhoompana will reduced the chances of thickening of alveoli which can give better gaseous exchange from lungs so increased oxygen carrying capacity of red blood cells, this can be conclude after observing slight fall in high hemoglobin of smokers after treating with Shaman Dhoompana. The average value of PEFR in cigarette smokers was significantly increased with value before treatment was 407 L/min. that was increased to 524 L/min. so we can say PEFR rate was increases near to normal level of subject when we treated with Ayurvedic Shaman Dhoompana.

Keywords: Dhoompaan, PEFR (Peak Expiratory Flow Rate), Cigarette smoking.
