A CASE STUDY: EFFECT OF POLYHERBAL FORMULATION IN VICHARCHIKA (ATOPIC DERMATITIS)

. Abstract Aim: Skin disorders account for a high proportion of ailments in children. Atopic Dermatitis is a chronic allergic inflammation of the skin that occurs in persons of all ages but is more common in children. In Ayurveda all skin disorders are considered under Kushtha, Vicharchika is one of the Kapha predominant disorder among the Kushtha classification. The present study is aimed to show the effect of Polyherbal formulation in Vicharchika (Atopic dermatitis) in children. Background: Atopic dermatitis is characterized by dry skin and recurrent, pruritic, symmetric dermatitis lesions. As per Ayurveda Atopic dermatitis can be correlated with Vicharchika in terms of clinical features, causative factors and pathogenesis. Case Description: A 5 years old female patient with her father from Haridwar district came in OPD of Department of Kaumarbhritya, Rishikul Campus, Uttarakhand Ayurved University, Haridwar with the presenting complaints of dryness, and severe itching all over the body along with blackish-brown discoloration of affected area since 4 years also having associated symptoms like nasal congestion, sneezing and swelling bilateral eyes from 4 months. On examining upper respiratory tract rt. sided nasal hypertrophy, chapped lips, white-coated tongue, lt. sided slightly enlarged tonsils were found, on auscultation lower respiratory tract wheezing sound present on lt. side lung. On examination Integumentary system: dry, cracked, flaky skin present mainly over face, extensor surface of hands, feet, knees, back and neck region along with blackish-brown discoloration of skin over knees, hands, feet and shoulders and swelling present underneath B/L eyes. Effect of the treatment was assessed on the basis of relief in itching and clearance of lesion. Conclusion: After intervention of the Polyherbal formulation for two months, there was a marked improvement in symptoms like Kandu, Rookshata, and Shyavata etc. So, it was concluded that internal use of Polyherbal formulation along with external use of Anu Taila in Nasya, Local application of Urtiplex lotion and proper hygiene maintenance are highly effective in the management of Vicharchika (Atopic Dermatitis).
