CRITICAL REVIEW ON CURRENT SCENARIO OF HEPATOTOXICITY AND ITS ANCIENT PERSPECTIVE

. Abstract The liver is one of the vital organ of the body, contributing about 2% of the total body weight and has an important role in the maintenance of normal metabolic functions and also the detoxification of the exogenous and endogenous challenges like xenobiotics, drugs, viral infections and chronic alcoholism which in turn, results in various hepatic diseases. Such hepatic diseases are one of the major problem in modern world, in which the use in the treatment of conventional drugs are inadequate and can have serious adverse effects. Thus there is need of alternatives for such disorders. For this purpose Ayurvedic medicines has a great demand in the developed as well as developing countries for primary healthcare because of their wide biological and medicinal activities, higher safety margins and lesser costs. Clinical and animal research in this century has confirmed the efficacy of several medicinal plants and herbo-mineral compounds described in Ayurveda in the treatment of liver disease, it may be cause for patients with chronic liver disease seek primary or adjunctive herbal treatment and it is a common occurrence observed all over the globe. The given study explores the concept of hepatotoxicity as per ancient and modern aspect and rule out the various possibilities of herbal drugs in our ancient Ayurvedic texts.
