Abstract

PRINCIPLES AND MECHANISM OF ORAL ANTI DIABETIC DRUG: A REVIEW

Abstract

Aim to give a brief light on basic ayurvedic principles which are applied in management of Prameha. Ayurveda says two types of treatment measure, which represent the end phase of all the treatment, processes namely Samshodhan (Eliminatory) and Samshamana (Pacificatory). Treatment of Prameha aims to balance of doshas and normal function of tissues. Acharya Charaka explains two types of prameha:- (1) Sthoola pramehi (Patients who have increased kapha dosha). (2) Krisha pramehi (Patients who have increased Vata dosha) In sthoola patients of prameha, first oleation therapy should be initiated. After oleation therapy, emetic therapy and there after purgation therapy is advised. So, sthoola patients of madhumeh is treated by aptarpana therapy. In Krisha patients, purificatory therapy should be subjected. Medicinal drugs and diet should be light for digestion and suturing (santarpan) property. Acharya Sushruta also mentioned two types of prameha:- (1) Sahaja Pramehi,(2) Apathya nimittaja Pramehi Sahaja pramehi is caused by bija dosha and these patients are krisha in nature. This type of patient is treated by Shaman ausadhy and proper annapan (diet). Apathya nimittaja occurs due to ahita ahaara (improper diet) and these patients are sthoola in nature. This type of patient is treated by Aptarpana Chikitsa and then Santarpan kriya. Many theories and principles like Tridosha theory, panchmahabhuta theory, sapta dhatu theory, theory of similarity and dissimilarity, proper diet, drugs, yogasana, also applicable on prameha, these principles based on constant observations. Modern anti-diabetic drugs follow different ways for bring down the increased blood sugar. Here, we tried to explain the mechanism of these drugs in simple way.
