Shatavisa Mukherjee*, Shambo Samrat Samajdar, Kaustav Saha, Anushka Ghosh, Santanu Kumar Tripathi

Abstract

Background: Burden of depression in the diabetics is linked with increased diabetes complications, high mortality rates, and poor quality of life. Literature review and meta-analysis reports showed that depression is a common comorbid condition among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The present study thus tried to assess the severity of depression in patients with T2DM presenting in diabetes out-patient department in a tertiary care hospital in eastern India. Methods: This cross-sectional observational study involved all consenting patients receiving antidiabetic medications, who were assessed for presence of depression using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), a 21-item self-report inventory for measuring the severity of depression. Depression status was associated with HbA1c value, fasting blood glucose levels, duration of diabetes, number and the type of antidiabetic medications. Results: Based on the score categorizations of this self-report inventory, 73% were found minimally depressive, 17% were under mild, 7% moderate and 3% severe. Increased glycaemic indices in terms of raised FBG and glycosylated hemoglobin was noted with higher scores of BDI. Conclusion: For all diabetic patients under care, periodic psychological assessments can be of help as each influence the other significantly. Timely intervention can also help with better treatment outcomes in T2DM patients.

Keywords: Type 2 diabetes mellitus, Depression, Beck’s Depression Inventory.
