ASSOCIATION OF NEONATAL SEPSIS WITH HISTORY OF PROM
*Professor Aisha Khatoon, Dr. Shaheen Masood, Dr. Riffat Farrukh and Dr. Qamar Rizvi
. Abstract The main aim of this study is to determine the incidence of neonatal sepsis with maternal PROM history. Nearly five hundred newborns die in Pakistan. Among newborns, sepsis is a vital reason to cause mortality and morbidity, despite the recent moderation in risk factors’ early identification, antimicrobial treatment and measures of newborn life support. “Prolonged rupture of the membrane (PROM)” among the other risk factors is the leading reason of delivered happened preterm (before 37 weeks) and newborn sepsis. This study determines the incidence of neonatal sepsis with history of maternal PROM. This is a cross-sectional research, conducted at Abbassi Shaheed Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan. The sample size of this study was calculated by “Epi info calculator” by using Rathore (2020). Ninety four newborns were enlisted by using a technique of consecutive sampling. SPSS software version 21 was used to assess data. Percentages and frequencies were calculated for categorical variables (like mode of delivery and gender), while the standard deviation and mean were computed for continuous variables (like total leukocyte count, C-reactive protein [CRP], and gestational age). The PROM incidence is eight to ten percent among the pregnant women assessed and those, two to four percent are linked with the intrauterine infection that places these newborns at sepsis risk. In EONS development the PROM duration has an important role- if continues longer than twenty four hours, risk increase by one to five percent. This study suggests that there is variability in EONS incidence following PROM with current practices in care for women during labor. Keywords: Prolonged rupture of the membrane, PROM, sepsis.
