ISOLATION, STRUCTURAL ELUCIDATION AND BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY OF THE FLAVONOID FROM THE LEAVES OF JUNIPERUS PHOENICEA

Abstract New flavonoid (1) was isolated from ethanol extract of the leaves of Juniperus phoenicea by preparative thin-layer chromatography technique. The leaves alcoholic extract of J. phoenicea dose dependently inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The structure of compound 1 was elucidated on the basis of MS, IR, UV, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopic data, including 2D NMR experiments to be 1-(3,4-dihydro-3,5,7-trihydroxy-2,2-dimethyl-2H-1-benzopyran-6- yl)-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)- -propen-1-one.
