TO INVESTIGATE THE ANTIDIABETIC ACTIVITY OF HYDROALCOHOLIC EXTRACT PREPARED FROM CYATHOCLINE PURPUREA
Amit Kumar Agrahari*, Jagdish Chandra Rathi and Manish Sahu
. Abstract The present study indicated that the usefulness of the hydroalcoholic extract of leaves of Cyathocline purpurea in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Extraction of defatted Cyathocline purpurea extract was done with ethanol solvent and % yield was found to be 6.55% w/w and their characteristics are reported also qualitative chemical tests are obtained. Total alkaloid content was calculated as atropine equivalent mg/100mg using the equation based on the calibration curve: Y=0.007X+ 0.007, R2=0.999, where X is the Atropine equivalent (AE) and Y is the absorbance. Total phenol content was expressed as mg/100mg of gallic acid equivalent of dry extract sample using the equation obtained from the calibration curve: Y = 0.017X+0.017, R2= 0.998, where X is the gallic acid equivalent (GAE) and Y is the absorbance. It is evident from the present investigation that alloxan administration causes a significant diabetogenic response in rats. Blood glucose levels were measured randomly on 0-6 hrs of study. The increase in glucose levels in the diabetic control group was found to be significant (P < 0.05) when compared to normal control group. This study suggested that hydroalcoholic extract of leaves of Cyathocline purpurea dose- dependently produced antidiabetic activity.
