Abstract

Thyroid problems are among the most common endocrine disorders presently seen worldwide. Hypothyroidism results when the thyroid gland fails to produce enough of thyroid hormone due to structural or functional impairments leading to hypometabolic state of hypothyroidism. There is no direct description of thyroid gland or their diseases in Ayurveda but a disease named Galaganda mentioned under 20 Shleshma Vikaras by Acharya Charak. Aacharya Sushruta described Galaganda as encapsulated small or big swellings in neck which is placed in 6th layer that is Rohini out of 7 skin layers mentioned in in Sharirsthan. The analysis of symptomatology of hypothyroidism in light of Ayurvedic principles of Dosha and Dushya showed that; this disease has the vitiation of Vata, Kapha and Dushti of Rasa Dhaatu and Medo Dhaatu as main pathological agents. Here in this Pathology what we come across is Dhatvagni Sada leading to Vikruta Vrudhi at Gala or Kantha Pradesha and type of Strotodushti is Sanga affecting the overall Dhaatu Parinamana process. Acharya Charak has described these disease particularly under Shwayathu Chikitsa where as Acharya Sushruta along with other treatment has specifically mentioned Raktamokshana in case of Vataja and Medoja Galaganda where Todanvat Vedana and Kanduyukta, Alparuk exists with several other localized symptoms. Leech therapy is a novel gift of Ayurveda. Jalaukavacharanis used in a variety of inflammatory conditions. Its mode of action depends on the injection of leech saliva in to patients tissues during process of blood sucking. Leech saliva contains numerous bioactive constituents which possesses anti- inflammatory, analgesic, thrombolytic, antioxidant, vasodilator, anti-coagulant and blood circulation enhancing properties. This would act as an appropriate supportive treatment along with internal medications in case of Galaganda in certain Avastha.
